The Holy Month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar and is considered one of the most important months in Islam. This month is characterized by fasting, as Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset, to draw closer to God and obey His commands. Fasting in Ramadan is the fourth pillar of the five pillars of Islam. In this blessed month, the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, on the Night of Power, a night that falls in the last ten days of Ramadan and is better than a thousand months. Therefore, Muslims celebrate this night with worship and supplication, seeking to obtain its blessings. Ramadan is considered a month of worship and piety, as Muslims are keen to perform prayers, read the Quran, and do good deeds, in addition to strengthening social ties by maintaining kinship ties and helping the needy. Group Iftar tables are held, and alms are given to the poor and needy, to enhance the values of solidarity and compassion in society. The beginning of the month of Ramadan is determined by sighting the crescent moon on the twenty-ninth day of the month of Sha'ban. If the crescent moon is sighted, the start of fasting is announced the following day; If it is not sighted, the month of Sha'ban completes thirty days and the day following it is the first day of Ramadan. The month lasts either 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the crescent moon, and concludes with Eid al-Fitr, where Muslims celebrate the completion of the fasting obligation. The month of Ramadan is an opportunity for Muslims to get closer to God, purify the soul, and enhance spiritual and social values, making it a special month in the life of every Muslim.

In the United Arab Emirates, the month of Ramadan is considered a religious and social occasion with a special character, where customs and traditions that reflect the Emirati heritage and culture are manifested. It begins with preparations before the month comes, where the night of the middle of Sha'ban, known as "Haq al-Laylah", is celebrated, where children wear traditional clothes and collect sweets and nuts from neighbors, expressing joy at the arrival of Ramadan.

Sighting the Ramadan Crescent: The beginning of Ramadan is determined by sighting the crescent moon. In the past, a group of trusted men would gather after the Maghrib prayer to sight the crescent moon. Today, the official authorities in the country announce the beginning of the month based on the investigations of the International Astronomy Center, which monitors the crescent from high places such as the summit of Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the Emirates.

Iftar Cannon: Firing the Iftar Cannon is a tradition that has been inherited for more than 40 years in the Emirates. The cannon is fired at sunset, announcing the time for fasting people to break their fast. The cannon sites are distributed in prominent places such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, and Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain.

Ramadan Decorations: During the month of Ramadan, Emirati cities are decorated with distinctive lights and decorations, as streets and buildings are lit with lanterns, crescents, and stars, creating a festive and spiritual atmosphere that reflects the joy of the holy month.

Ramadan Tables: Group Iftar tables, known as “Mawaed Al Rahman,” are held across the Emirates, where Iftar meals are served to fasting people, promoting the values of solidarity and compassion in society.

Cultural and religious events: During the month of Ramadan, many cultural and religious events are organized, such as lectures, seminars, cultural, heritage and Quranic competitions, with the aim of enhancing religious awareness and spreading Islamic values.

Reducing working hours: Working hours are reduced by two hours per day during the month of Ramadan, out of respect for the feelings of those fasting and appreciation for the special nature of the holy month. These aspects come together to make the month of Ramadan in the UAE a unique spiritual and social experience, reflecting the cohesion between members of society and adherence to authentic values and traditions.

So welcome to the month of goodness and blessings, the month of mercy and forgiveness, the month in which mercy descends and ranks are raised. We ask God to let us reach Ramadan and grant us success in fasting and standing, and to make its days full of obedience, and its nights full of light and tranquility. Happy New Year, and may God return to us and to you with goodness, blessings and blessings.
